Replacing Missing Teeth+

The team at Hawthorne Dental understand that in some circumstance, despite yours and our best efforts, it may not be possible to maintain your natural teeth. Once your tooth has been removed, it is ideal to replace this tooth to prevent from further damage to your surrounding teeth and bite. The options for replacing these teeth are implants, ceramic or metallic bridges, or removeable dentures or plates. In cases whereby all your teeth are missing, implant- supported or implant-assisted full dentures will be the most optimal option without fear of loose dentures.

Please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss these options further.

Rotary Endodontics+

In many cases whereby the tooth has very deep decay or an irritate/infected pulp, root canal therapy is the only option to save this tooth in the long-term. These procedures have been made available for many decades now, however, with advances in technology, root canal therapy has been made more simplified and more comfortable for our patients, giving them the opportunity to maintain their teeth for longer. At Hawthorne Dental, we use the latest in rotary endodontic technology to ensure the best possible results for our patients as well as minimising discomfort.

With the increased desire to restore natural tooth function as a result of missing teeth or ill-fitting dentures, implants have become somewhat of a standard in this treatment. Not only can implants improve the general function of your teeth, they can also improve the appearance of your teeth and also markedly improve your ability to speak. They are a biocompatible material, made from titanium, which becomes part of your bone structure when inserted via a process called osseointegration. They are commonly used in single tooth replacements, but can also be used for complex bridgework and supporting or assisting dentures.

If you have any queries or concerns regarding these options, please do not hesitate to contact us.

TMJ Disorders+

Many people in the community suffer from issues with their jaw. It may range from something as simple as a click in the jaw to something more serious like temporo-mandibular disorder (TMD). Issues with the joints of the jaw usually occur in people who are under increased pressure, stemming from problems of subconsciously clenching and grinding their teeth during periods of stress and tension. Signs and symptoms of TMD include: muscle pain in the jaw, temples and neck resulting in headaches; clicking and deviation of the jaw upon opening; lock jaw; jaw muscle soreness upon waking in the morning and; ringing in the ears or earaches.

Prolonged periods of grinding and clenching of your teeth can be very harmful to your teeth and lead to permanent damage to your jaw joint, as well as fractured teeth and fillings. Apart from stress, TMD has been linked to changes in your regular bite, poor posture and sleep positions. However, all these problems can usually be solved through consultation with your dentists and the fabrication of a splint for your teeth/jaw. In more difficult cases, it may involve management with muscle and joint specialists and/or minor surgery.

If you feel you have this condition, please do not hesitate to contact us to make an appointment for your consultation.

What to do:

Knocked out tooth
If the tooth has been knocked out completely (with the root in tact), attempt to replant the tooth in its correct orientation back into the socket. However, if the tooth is dirty (fallen on the ground), rinse the tooth in milk, being careful not to hold the tooth by roots. If milk is not readily available, rinse the tooth quickly under water (no more than a few seconds) or have the patient gently suck it clean prior to putting it back into the socket.

However, if the tooth can not be replanted, place the tooth in milk or in the patient’s mouth, either on the side of the cheek of under the tongue. In such a situation, contact us as soon as possible, as time is critical for successful replantation.

Broken tooth:
If the broken tooth resulted from a blow to the face, clean the debris with warm water and place a cold pack on the face next to the site of injury to minimise swelling. If possible, try and keep all the missing bits of the teeth and bring them to the dentist, keeping them moist. It may be possible to bond the teeth back almost without any visible scarring. It is also wise to contact us as soon as possible.

Oral Surgery/Wisdom Teeth+

Wisdom teeth is the commonly used term for ‘third molars’ – the large teeth right at the back of the mouth that come through last, usually between the ages of 17 and 25, though they can also erupt much later or not at all.

Wisdom teeth tend to become problematic when there is insufficient room for them and they become impacted (stuck). This normally results in infection and inflammation around the gum covering the impacted teeth. The most common symptoms include, swelling, bad taste/odor, pain, soreness on chewing, jaw stiffness, headaches and a general unwell feeling.

It is recommended that all patients have their wisdom teeth assessed and monitored by their dentist during their late teens and early twenties. The dentist will recommend an X-Ray to see how the wisdom teeth are positioned and whether extraction is required. The X-Ray will also determine if the wisdom teeth can be extracted in the chair or a referral to a maxio-facial surgeon is required.
